Twelve-year-old lioness Shinyanga visited our veterinary hospital in June to undergo a health check.
Veterinarians and vet nurses examined her while she was under a general anaesthetic, taking blood samples, checking her body condition and teeth. Overall, the 120 kg lioness was in excellent health though one of her pre-molar teeth had to be removed.
The tooth had a crack in it that could have become infected and caused an abscess if left. Veterinarians removed the tooth and stitched the hole before Shinyanga was taken back to her night quarters to recover.
Keepers report Shinyanga is doing fine without the tooth and that its removal hasn’t slowed down her eating.
