Biodiversity is Us

We are all connected. Biological diversity (ecosystems, species & genetics) is a vital ingredient of human survival and welfare.

‘Biodiversity’ is ‘us’. We are all connected. Our place in the natural world relates to the diversity of life on Earth – it is the foundation on which human life depends. Biodiversity provides us with the food we eat, the clean the air we breathe, the water we drink, the raw materials we use to construct our homes and businesses, countless medicines and natural remedies, and provides many other things we rely on.

Biodiversity is indelibly linked to our lives in every possible way and we need to protect it. After all, we live in one of the most biodiverse places on the planet – it’s called a Biodiversity Hotspot (Link).

You Can Help

Protect biodiversity today and reduce the impact you personally have on the environment by making simple changes to your daily routine. Here’s three things you can do:

1. Download the smartphone app by searching for ‘Biodiversity is Us’ in your app store. You can discover 400 animal species from around the world; learn more about how zoos and aquaria are taking action for biodiversity;  take the biodiversity quiz; and find out what you can do to help save wildlife and protect biodiversity.

2. Follow Perth Zoo on social media, on Facebook, Instagram Twitter and YouTube.

3. Get involved in Perth Zoo’s activities to help save wildlife and biodiversity. Find out more here.

How Zoos and Aquaria are Taking Global Action for Biodiversity

The world’s 1,300 leading Zoos and Aquaria are part of a global organisation, the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA).  Together, these zoos attract more than 700 million visitors a year. They have the responsibility and unique potential to connect people with wildlife, promote the importance of biodiversity conservation, and show them how whole communities can contribute by developing their environmental sustainability and changing from within.

With many species facing extinction, zoos are helping prevent their disappearance through international breeding programs that are helping to maintain a genetically healthy and diverse range of species. Read about Perth Zoo’s breeding programs here.

There are hundreds of conservation projects carried out by zoos and aquariums around the world right now, which are supporting the continued existence of many local and endangered species. One-in-seven threatened species can be found in a zoo or aquarium and several ‘extinct in the wild’ species battle on in human care.

Zoos and aquaria also raise funds for conservation projects around the world. Collectively, this can match (even surpass) the contributions of some other leading global conservation organisations and can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Perth Zoo is a proud member of this global movement and raises funds from the local community to support a variety of projects both internationally and at home in Australia.
