A new King has roared into Perth Zoo.

There’s a new big cat in town. Let us introduce you to Jelani!

The nine-year-old male lion has arrived at Perth Zoo from South Australia and joins pair of lioness sisters, Makeba and Uzuri.

We can’t wait for you to meet him, but for now, Jelani needs time to settle in. Part of the lion habitat is closed to the public to give our King some quiet time to get used to his new home.

Perth Zoo Senior Carnivore Keeper, Becky Thomasson, said: “Jelani has had a long journey to Perth Zoo, and we are now focused on getting him comfortable and settled in.
“We know our visitors will be so excited to meet him, but it’s very important we give him plenty of space and take things slowly to make sure he can adjust to his new home with no stress.

“We will make sure to keep you all updated with how he’s going and when he’ll be ready to make his public debut.

“He is a very handsome man and we can’t wait for you to see him in all his glory!”

Over the coming days, our animal care experts will keep a close eye on Jelani and work on developing a trusting rapport with him. In the meantime, you can still visit Jelani’s pride-to-be, Makeba and Uzuri.
