Perth Zoo keepers have developed a brand-new ‘dictionary’ to help them understand what animals are communicating!

Combining global research and their own on-the-ground zoo keeping expertise, they have cracked the code on what lemurs are communicating.

Using this tool, known as an ethogram, they can now translate everything from yawning to ear twitching, tail flicking and more!

The team document all of the behaviours they observe in our lemurs and use literature and their own expertise to translate what the behaviour means.

While our primate team are experts in lemur care, there is always more to learn!

Using these ethograms our team can better understand our lemurs and their individual personalities, so they can give them the very best targeted care.

As a Zoo and Aquarium Association accredited zoo, positive welfare is at the heart of all we do.

Using science-based tools like ethograms, we can make sure our animals live rich, diverse, and happy lives.
