Review at the Zoo: Year 11 Biology
Review at the Zoo is a unique and engaging opportunity for students to consolidate their biological understanding in preparation for exams.
Guided by a Perth Zoo educator, students revise the concepts of classification, population sampling techniques and biodiversity in this whole-day experience.
- Suitable for Year 11 ATAR Biology students
- Three tutorial-style presentations (approximately 45 minutes each) from 9:45 am - 1:30 pm.
- Cost $20.20 per student

Overview
Students take part in three tutorial-style presentations, including live animal encounters and PowerPoint slides, in one of our indoor education experience areas.
Review at the Zoo will run on 19 & 25 September, 16, 20 & 28 October and 5 November.
Topics covered include:
- Classification – Apply the concepts of taxonomic hierarchy, binomial nomenclature and dichotomous keys to identify a real live animal example.
- Population Sampling Techniques – Compare the benefits and limitations of using quadrats, transects, camera traps and physical traps, as well as the capture-tag-recapture method. Then use your calculators to estimate the population size and density of some real case studies.
- Biodiversity – Discuss how biodiversity is measured, why it is essential, how humans have impacted it, and what Perth Zoo is doing about it through our Native Species Breeding Programs.
