Homeschooling goes wild!

Our Homeschool at Perth Zoo programs have been designed just for you! We welcome homeschool students aged 5-15 years of age.

  • 10 September - 12:30pm-2:30pm - Survive and Thrive - ages 8-15
Term 4
  • 27 October - 12:30pm-2:00pm - Rainforest Rangers - ages 8-15
  • 13 November - 12:30pm-2:00pm - Habitat Builders - ages 5-12
  • 30 November - 12:15pm-1:15pm - Ngulla Boodja Bidi Boorda - ages 5-15
  • 3 December - 10:00am- approx 1:30pm (see details)- ZooFest Creature Quest! - ages 5-12
COST: $25 per participant. Includes Zoo entry, plus entry for one supervising adult per family booking.
 
NEW! ZooFest Creature Quest - ages 5-12
Calling all adventurers! Join us on a wild quest to uncover how the staff at Perth Zoo, and rangers around the world all work to help save wildlife! You will be given a timetable for the day, but don’t worry, there will also be time to explore the Zoo to visit all your favourite animals.
  • Start the day in our Theatre for a presentation about some of our amazing conservation work (approx 30 minutes).
  • At your scheduled time, join us in the African Savannah where our education team will teach your child/ren about the work of wildlife rangers. Then, in small groups you will follow the trail to complete ranger jobs (approx 60 minutes).
  • Please bring your own pencil to use for the day. You may also like to bring a clipboard, but not essential.
  • Duration: Approx 1 hr educator contact time and 30 minutes on a self guided education activity from 10am-1:30pm with breaks and zoo exploration time. You will receive a timetable for the day.

NEW! Rainforest Rangers - ages 8-15
  • Look in depth at the Asian Rainforest through the eyes of those that are employed to care for it. 
  • Step into the role of a wildlife ranger, taking on teamwork tasks inspired by real-world conservation efforts.
  • Investigate the threats facing wildlife and habitats, and discover how on-the-ground action helps rebuild populations and support communities.

Habitat Builders - ages 5-12
  • Get a close look at some of the habitats in the zoo and learn how they are built to support each individual species. 
  • Meet a local wildlife friend and learn how you can create habitat for wild animals in your community. 
  • Build an animal habitat out of LEGO with a group. 
  • Duration: 90 minutes

Survive and Thrive - ages 8-15
  • Use observation skills to investigate adaptations that help an animal to survive. 
  • Understand how we can ensure our local wildlife not only survives, but thrives. 
  • Meet a scaly friend and learn how this animal survives and thrives in it’s environment.
  • Duration: 90 minutes

Zookeeping 101 - ages 5-12
  • Find out more about the day in the life of a Perth Zoo keeper. 
  • Help with some Zoo keeper jobs. 
  • Get up-close to some Australian animals. 
  • Discover citizen science projects that you can be a part of to keep an eye on local wildlife.
  • Duration: 90 minutes

Educator and students taking part in program Ngulla Boodja Bidi Boorda - ages 5-15
  • Designed in partnership with Noongar educators and guided by cultural respect and authenticity. 
  • The program weaves together storytelling, science, art, movement, and language to deepen students’ understanding of Country, culture, and caring for the environment.
  • Duration: 60 minutes

Wildlife First Aid - ages 5-12
  • Learn about how to rescue sick, injured or orphaned local wildlife. 
  • Find out how to make and use a wildlife first aid kit at home. 
  • Discover how our vet team work to look after the animals at Perth Zoo.

  • Siblings under 5: To maximise hands-on learning, we encourage families to attend without children under 5 where possible. Restricted behind-the-scenes areas mean younger children may need to wait outside with a supervising adult for part of the program.
  • Additional adults or children: Additional adults or children who are not enrolled in the Homeschool at Perth Zoo program must pay general Zoo admission and cannot participate in program activities. Frequent visitors may wish to consider a Perth Zoo membership: Perth Zoo membership | Perth Zoo

  • Important Information
    • Suitable for students aged 5-15, program dependent. Check session details above for ages.
    • Adult supervision is required for the duration of the session. Due to space restrictions, we ask for only one supervising adult per family booking. The supervising adult will have free entry into the Zoo.

    • Please be aware that due to location capacity limits, there may be times during the session where children go into an area of the zoo without their supervising adult (who will wait outside) for a short period of time. 
    • There may be times where the participants are required to work in a group with other participants.
    • We understand everyone learns differently, so please speak to the educator at sign in if there is anything we can do to ensure your child has an amazing experience.
