These dedicated members of our Zoo crew are behind the stunning, natural habitats that make our zoo a sanctuary not just for our animals, but for all who visit!

Take our Australian Wetlands for example.

Inspired by the beautiful Herdsman Lake, this peaceful oasis was meticulously designed and curated by our talented team.

From the calm waters to the towering Rottnest Island Tea trees and swaying native reeds, the wetlands is a true native gem.
 

An immersive oasis

The wetlands is one of Horticulture Team Leader Kathleen Mauger’s personal favourites.

“Every time I step into the wetlands, I feel so peaceful.” Kathleen said.

“We wanted to create something truly immersive for our visitors where they could escape the hustle and bustle of the city and connect with nature, and importantly give our special wetlands birds a paradise of their own.

“We planted eight native species like the Rottnest Island Tea trees for birds to perch in, Pale Rush reeds for nesting sites, and Sollya plants for the birds who love to hide in the undergrowth!”

As well as sheltering over 10 species of birds, several native frogs, dragonflies, and praying mantis species liked the Aussie Wetlands so much that they’ve also moved in!

It’s now a living, breathing ecosystem teeming with life.
 
Beyond the Wetlands

It takes real expertise to be able to build habitats inspired by all corners of the globe, making sure every animal resident feels right at home!

The wetlands are just one example of the horticulture team’s amazing work.

These green-thumbed wizards are responsible for every tree and plant across the zoo!

Whether it’s growing the food for most of our herbivores to eat, tending habitats for our animal residents, or maintaining our botanical gardens for visitors to enjoy, their work keeps our Zoo a beautiful place for both animals and people.
