Meet our Sugar Gliders, tiny marsupials with a MAJOR sweet tooth.
Found in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia, sugar gliders are known for their impressive ability to glide between trees with their special, stretchy wing membrane.
But what really makes them stand out is their diet!
Much like us when we reach for that second (or third, or fourth) piece of candy, sugar gliders–as their name suggests–have a strong love of sweets.
In the wild, they love to snack on sap and nectar from trees and flowers, which are full of natural sugars.
It’s their energy source, fuelling their impressive acrobatic glides through the forest!
Unfortunately, life isn’t so sweet for many sugar gliders in the world.
Because this precious species is exceptionally cute, unfortunately they are highly trafficked in the illegal pet trade.
These tiny nocturnal marsupials are plucked directly from their natural habitats to be sold as pets and bred illegally.
This troubling trade is greatly fuelled by social media, but you can help through your online habits!
If you see a sugar glider on social media in an unnatural situation, like being kept as a pet in someone’s home or being posed with toys or clothing, the best thing you can do is NOT interact with the post at all and report it right away.
Small actions like this can make a BIG difference, even to the littlest species.
