At Perth Zoo, we take special care when naming our animals and always try to choose one that is meaningful to the country they’re native to.
After much anticipation and playful acrobatics, our little primates have been given names that perfectly match their entry into the world.
Drumroll please…
Meet Brinco and Inti!
Inti
Inti means ‘sun’ in Quechua, which is a native language used throughout South America – the home of the Bolivian Squirrel Monkey!
This name is perfect for sweet Inti because the little one was born in the morning and taken straight into the sunshine by mum Vivo.
And what makes this extra special? Most squirrel monkey babies are born in the darkness of night!
The native Incan people who spoke Quechua saw the sun as a source of life and energy, and we can confirm that Inti has life and energy in spades!
Brinco
Brinco means “to leap” in Spanish, which is the main language used in Bolivia today.
Sue’s baby was born on 29 February, making Brinco a super special leap year baby!
This little leapling’s name turned out to be especially fitting, as Brinco loves to leap about the habitat with amazing agility and enthusiasm!
Also recently named was our adorable Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo joey Muku, representing a village in Papua New Guinea where we have helped to fund important conservation for wild tree kangaroos.
You can visit babies Brinco and Inti in our Amazonia area, and joey Muku in our Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo habitat.
We are open every day from 9am-5pm, rain or shine!
