Southern Cassowary Project
Habitat destruction is a major threat to the cassowary. As a result, they come into conflict with humans, where both cassowaries and humans have been killed. Perth Zoo has partnered with Rainforest Rescue and the Zoo and Aquarium Association to save the cassowary.
How can you help Perth Zoo save the Southern Cassowary?
Sadly the Southern Cassowary has been badly affected by habitat destruction and cyclones with as few as 2,000 mature birds left in their natural rainforest habitat in northern Queensland. The Southern Cassowary is listed as Endangered by the Australian Government under the Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation Act.
With your support, Perth Zoo takes part in a regional breeding program and helps Southern Cassowaries in the wild through its support of the Save the Cassowary campaign. This national campaign aims to increase awareness about the plight of the Southern Cassowary in Australia and raises money for recovery actions.
