You might remember from his recent health check-up our vet team have been supporting Memphis through arthritis and skin allergies.
But thankfully, his incredible carers have got his wellness routine down pat to provide him relief.
Every day starts with a warm hose clean to wash his wounds of any bugs, mud or hay.
Once squeaky clean, his carers apply a healing cream followed by a shiny aluminium spray that acts like a rhino-sized band-aid.
If you spot Memphis’ silver patches on his skin, now you know that’s his battle-armour!
To wrap up the treatment, he steps onto the scales for a weight and movement check to make sure he’s not limping or carrying too much weight. At nearly 2,000 kilos, Memphis weighs more than a car!
His care routine is made easier and tastier, as he munches away on his favourite treats of celery and hay.
Thanks to this daily love and attention, Memphis’ skin is getting back on track.
Our big guy has been with us since 1990, spending his days snacking and rolling in the mud nextdoor to his son Bakari.
In the sanctuary of Perth Zoo, Memphis and Bakari do not need to fight for dwindling resources or escape a poacher. But for their cousins in the wild, every day can be a battle to survive.
Rhinos have been grazing the planet for over 50 million years, making them one of the oldest mammal groups still alive.
But sadly, they are one of the fastest declining wild populations in the world.
Memphis and Bakari’s horns are made of keratin, the same stuff as human hair and nails. And unfortunately, it’s this unique rhino feature that has led to population declines.
Poachers target Rhinos for their horns, and today, fewer than 15,572 White Rhinos remain in the wild.
Despite it having no proven medicinal properties, these gentle giants are hunted unjustly.
Our super Southern White Rhino Memphis is a conservation rockstar having sired two offspring over his 37 years, a horn-able contribution to regional breeding programs.
And beyond breeding, Memphis has also been an incredible ambassador for his wild cousins.
Memphis’ reminds us conservation starts with compassion, and World Rhino Day shines a spotlight on these incredible species. Our conservation partners Save the Rhino and TRAFFIC are working hard to make sure rhinos don’t become a thing of the past.
Their outstanding efforts are charging conservation forward to protect these magical creatures.
Every effort helps Rhinos stampede the wild for generations to come.
