If you guessed peacock … you nailed it!
That unmistakable HONK makes peacocks one of the loudest birds at the Zoo.
But our dazzling Indian Peafowl isn’t the only newcomer in the walk-through aviary.
Let’s meet the rest of our feathered friends!
Indian Peafowl
Male
Indian peafowl are called peacocks, and they’re the ones who make the honk sound!
We knew our new resident was a boy the moment he arrived because he started honking right away.
His distinct call earned him his affectionate nickname, Bonky.
At just one year old, Bonky hasn’t yet grown his majestic fan‑shaped train of iridescent ‘eyes’.
He still has a few years to go, as peacocks don’t get their full plumage until they’re about four.
Bonkys future tail will be made up of feathers that reflect light, so the blue and green you will see is just an illusion!
Blue and Gold Macaw
Inca and Manu, our
Blue and Gold Macaw pair, give Bonky a run for his money in levels of loudness.
The brother and sister duo are sometimes known to screech their way through their habitat, using their loud calls to communicate.
Macaws are known for their intelligence and problem-solving skills, so keepers must keep the one-year-old pair busy!
Inca and Manu’s favourite challenge is cracking nuts with each other. With beaks stronger than a lion’s jaw (up to 700 PSI!), tough nuts are easy breezy!
Golden Pheasant
Prefer to observe a quieter bird? Our three
Golden Pheasants are as unique in looks as their neighbours are loud.
The pheasants’ long tails and sweeping golden crests make them stand out instantly.
Known historically as a popular game bird, Golden Pheasants can sprint at impressive speeds of 40–48 km/h.
Their long tails and short wings make it easier for them to run than fly!
Despite their agility, these birds can be very shy, choosing to hide amongst foliage and large bushes.
So be sure to take your time for a chance to see them in the aviary!
