It feels like just yesterday that this gangly bundle of joy came into the world. But today, our youngest giraffe Zahara is celebrating her fourth birthday!

While she may have started life at a tiny 6ft tall, now Zahara towers as one of the tallest animals at the Zoo and weighs in at around 640kg – that’s the same as a baby grand piano!

But it’s not just her height that makes her stand out.

No two giraffes wear the same coat and Zahara is no exception. Her spot pattern is completely unique just like a human fingerprint!

For the past four years, Zahara has been standing tall to help us raise awareness for her wild cousins.

She’s been a firm favourite in our community. In fact, she made history with a Perth Zoo first! She was one of two giraffe calves born at the Zoo within months of each other.

Having two calves grow up together adorable to watch for keepers and visitors alike, but it also represented a major achievement for our role in the breeding program. Since 1995, we have successfully bred and raised twelve giraffe calves, including Zahara.

These efforts are more important than ever. In the past 30 years, wild giraffe populations have declined by 40%.
Today, fewer than 80,000 giraffes remain in the African plains.

With habitat loss and illegal hunting threatening the gentle giants, regional breeding programs and conservation efforts play a vital role in securing their future.

Zahara’s fourth birthday is a reminder of the importance of conservation and hope for the future of her species.
Because let’s face it, standing tall never goes out of style.

And here’s a neck-stra special fun fact!

Zahara comes from a long line of giraffe greats.

Her great-grandmother and grandmother featured in one of the most iconic, world-famous wildlife photos ever taken “The Kiss.”
