Sometimes the most remarkable stories start with a single step - or in Will’s case, thousands of them every day.

15-year-old, Perth local, Will, set himself the challenge of running 3 km every day to raise funds for Perth Zoo’s Numbat breeding program, part of our Native Species Breeding Program.

As a Zoo member for the last 11 years, Will has been visiting the Zoo for the average life span of a Western Grey Kangaroo.

Donating to Numbat conservation was an obvious decision for Will with his fascination of Numbats beginning at a young age.

“Everything about them is amazing especially that they contribute to the ecosystem making them a special animal. As a critically endangered species, there are so few of them, so Numbat conservation work is pivotal.” Will said.

Often spending his spare time at the Zoo after school, on the weekends or in the school holidays, Will considers Perth Zoo to be his ‘happy place’, where the connection with nature ignited his passion for wildlife and wanting to make a difference.

“What I love is that my visits to Perth Zoo is contributing to conservation of not just Australian species like the Numbat and Western Swamp Tortoise but animals all over the globe from Sumatran Tigers to Ruffed Lemurs and Painted dogs” Will explained.

To recognise his dedication and fundraising efforts, we invited him behind-the-scenes to meet our conservation scientists and see first-hand the work being done to safeguard species like the numbat and western swamp tortoise.

Drawing on his studies in agriculture and wildlife science, Will found meaningful links between his learning and the research happening here at the Zoo.

Will’s story is more than a fundraising effort—it’s a powerful example of the next generation stepping up for wildlife, driven by passion and purpose.

Our sincere thanks to Will for his extraordinary efforts and all the wonderful community members who donate to Perth Zoo.
