Our Sumatran Tiger, Jaya, leads the pack as an ambassador for his species, and all tigers, on his seventeenth birthday!

Jaya is jungle royalty at Perth Zoo and is a firm favourite among keepers and visitors.

Although Jaya has had a paws-itive life as a permanent Zoo resident, Sumatran Tigers are critically endangered.

It is estimated that less than 400 Sumatran Tigers currently live in the wild.

There wouldn’t be enough tigers to fill the seats of a TransPerth train.

Due to habitat destruction and poaching, a considerable number of Sumatran tigers exist in zoo’s rather than in their natural habitat.

We are helping them claw back from extinction and you can help us turn the tables for tigers!

Keeper Jen has pounced on the opportunity as Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) Species Program Coordinator for Sumatran Tigers.

The role has a priority on improving breeding programs for Sumatran Tigers and understand what works best across zoos in Australasia.

Taking a leading role in the program lets the Zoo continue our commitment of raising awareness of what needs to be done to support tigers in the wild.

You can also help protect our fierce feline friends in the wild.

The easiest way to help is by not liking, sharing or following any content on social media that does not support Sumatran Tigers.

By engaging, you encourage unsafe practices that contribute to tigers critically endangered status.

On a wider scale you can also take your conservation efforts with you when travelling overseas.

Always choose travel and tour operators who practice in a way that protect endangered species, bonus points if they work to support local conservation efforts!

The most important way you help, is every time you visit Perth Zoo.

All our visitors help support the vital conservation work we do by simply buying a ticket.

So next time you’re at the Zoo be sure to stalk past and wish Jaya a Happy Birthday!
