On International Women’s Day we’re celebrating the women who lead our pack!

Today, 69 percent of our Zoo workforce is women.

But that that hasn’t always been the reality over our 127-year history.

As trailblazers like Kath opened new doors, leaders like Katie shaped workplace norms and educators like Naomi inspired the next generation, the Zoo has become a place where women drive change every day.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Balance the Scales asks us to create a world where every woman and girl is safe heard and free to shape her own life.

Meet the women who have embodied this year’s theme in the past, in the present and for the future.

Kath Mauger – Senior Horticulturist - Paving the path forward

Throughout her time at Perth Zoo, Kath has challenged stereotypes and helped pave the way for women in horticulture.

Starting back in 1988, she entered a male dominated workplace that presented challenges and came on Aa the Zoo’s fourth female employee, and only second female horticulturist.

But Kath’s determination, skill and positive attitude broke down barriers and opened doors for the women who followed.

Now in her 38th year at the Zoo, Kath has seen a positive shift in the number of women across the Zoo and can proudly reflect on her career as a women shaping a career in a trade.

“There are so many role model females in the trades, it’s such an exciting and supportive environment for females now.”

Katie Madden – Project officer - Shaping her career

From caring for animals to reshaping future zoo environments, Katie has carved out a new path and continues to drive meaningful change.

She began her career as a zoo keeper, but over time her priorities shifted, and she realised she needed a a change.

Supported by strong female mentors who advocated for her growth, Katie felt empowered to move into an operational role within the Zoo.

Katie’s journey shows what can happen when women are supported to shape their own careers.

“Never underestimate yourself. Sometimes as women we under sell ourselves but trust your gut and go for the opportunity what have you got to lose. You got this, the world is your oyster.”

Naomi Adamczyk – Community engagement educator - Inspiring the next generation

As a community engagement coordinator, Naomi’s passion for educating began when she found the need to make a difference in young peoples lives.

At the Zoo, Naomi inspires the next generation of conservationists, sparking a lifelong passion for wildlife and the environment through her inclusive and engaging classes.

She champions compassion and care while ensuring everyone’s voice is heard.

Through her work Naomi helps girls see themselves as future scientist, educators and environmental leaders.

“Let your passion guide you but extend compassion to yourself. The work that you do matters but you also matter. Actions create big change no matter what you do even if it is small, you can make a difference.”

Let’s balance the scales together

When women and girls stand equal, families are stronger, workplaces are fairer, communities thrive, and society becomes safer for everyone.

Here at Perth Zoo, we want to continue supporting and empowering our female employees to continue to pave the way, shape their futures and inspire future generations.
