Today we’re celebrating our froggy friends and their vital role in our ecosystems.

Did you know? Australia has more than 200 species of frogs!

Sadly, over the past 30 years frog numbers have been declining globally. They are facing the biggest species extinction crisis since the age of dinosaurs. We all need to play a part in saving our frogs.

Frogs are facing numerous threats, including habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. By taking small steps in our daily lives, we can make a big difference in their survival.

How to help our froggy friends out 🐸💚

  1. Create a toad-ally frog-friendly backyard: build a small pond. It’s a sign of luck and abundance if you hear frogs in your backyard, so keep them happy!
  2. Save water: look for ways to recycle water where possible, fix leaks and use water-saving devices.
  3. Limit your use of herbicides and insecticides as they can be deadly to frogs: use natural alternatives in your garden instead.
  4. Be a responsible pet owner: keep cats inside at night to protect the wildlife.

Frog-tastic breeding work at the Zoo

Since 2005, our Breeding for Release program has been working to protect threatened native frog species. Through this program, we’ve developed successful techniques for rearing, breeding and managing frogs. We’re making frog-tastic progress each season – check out the video below featuring some of the 120 frogs recently released last spring into the Margaret River Region ⬇️
