If you’ve visited Perth Zoo in the morning, there’s a very good chance you’ve heard our Northern White-cheeked Gibbons’ iconic calls across the Zoo.
Northern White-cheeked Gibbons are one of the rarest apes in the world, with less than 2,000 individuals left in the wild. They hold a very special place in our hearts.
That’s why, as well as working closely with other zoos and wildlife parks to coordinate the pairing and breeding of Gibbons in the Australasian region, we also support our international conservation partner Fauna & Flora to protect and preserve wild Northern White-Cheeked Gibbons from the illegal wildlife trade and habitat destruction in Pu Mat National Park, Vietnam.
Fauna & Flora work spans across the globe, with projects to save nature in more than 40 countries, and a shared goal to protect the diversity of life on earth.
Recently Fauna & Flora work for gibbons in Vietnam included:
- Running more than 845 patrols, removing 268 snares
- Employing 13 community conservationists to conduct patrols and collect data to better understand wild gibbons and the threats they are facing
- Running a successful campaign targeting people that hunt and trap wildlife, and those buying and selling wildlife products.
Now they are conducting significant mapping of gibbon habitat, building capacity among rangers to monitor gibbons, engaging local communities in gibbon conservation and more. Our latest support has extended to protect the critically endangered coa vit gibbon in Cao Bang province, Vietnam.
This work makes a huge difference to White-cheeked Gibbons in Pu Mat National Park, and by protecting this precious forest habitat it also saves many less visible creatures that live there!
