Sun Bears might be the smallest bears in the world, but they’ve got some seriously big appetites—especially when it comes to honey! At Perth Zoo, our dedicated keepers come up with clever ways to encourage these incredible animals to use their natural skills to forage and enjoy tasty treats!

Honey-lovers with super-long tongues

Sun Bears have an extra-long tongue (up to 25cm!) that helps them slurp up honey from deep inside trees, logs and beehives. Here at Perth Zoo, our keepers use enrichment to encourage the bears to use their tongues for a snack reward just like they would in the wild!

Watch Bopha use her tongue to enjoy some smashed avo!

Clever problem solvers

To mimic life in the wild, no two days are the same for Jamran and Bopha!  They are often treated to bamboo filled with honey. Using their claws and tongues, they work to extract every drop, just like they would in the rainforests of Southeast Asia.

Our zookeepers truly go above and beyond to provide the best care for our Sun Bears!

Sleeping beauties

Sun Bears are mostly nocturnal (active at night), resulting in them spending most of their day sleeping or sunbathing in trees. Unlike other bears, Sun Bears do not hibernate due to the warm climate and year-round food supply.
