Do you know what a Yooran is? How about a Wetj?
People like to name animals. Sometimes to describe what they look like. Sometimes with a Latin or scientific name. It’s important to remember that many animals have names in the languages of the First Peoples who shared the land with them.
Hop into the Zoo these school holidays to celebrate Aboriginal culture and connection to country by learning the Noongar names of your favourite animal friends.
Follow the adventure trail around the Zoo to unlock the traditional knowledge and be sure to look-out for the tracks and traces of the Yooran, you or the long sticky tongue of the Nyingarn.
We proudly acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people, their Country, spirit and traditions as customary owners of the lands upon which our Zoo stands.
Venture behind the scenes to check out a giant insect who’d rather be a leaf, and have a hopping great time with an adorable wallaby.
