Youth at Perth Zoo

Youth at Perth Zoo (YAPZ) is a youth development and conservation program co-designed with young people to create meaningful opportunities for learning, leadership, and conservation action. It is for young people who are passionate about wildlife, the environment, and making a positive difference at Perth Zoo and in their community.

Our mission
To empower young people to connect with wildlife, inspire action for conservation, and create a future where wildlife and humanity thrive together.

More than a conservation program
YAPZ is also a community.
The program brings together young people from diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in wildlife and conservation. Through shared experiences, teamwork, and social activities, participants develop lasting friendships, support networks, and a strong sense of belonging.

To participate in the Youth at Perth Zoo (YAPZ) Pilot program, participants must:

Be aged 13 to 19 years.
Hold a current Perth Zoo Membership, or purchase one before the start of the program.
Collaborate with our Youth Leaders to contribute to program development
Have your say: your feedback plays an important role in shaping future activities. Participants are expected to contribute feedback and ideas throughout the pilot program

Program structure
The YAPZ holiday program runs from 6 January to 28 January 2027, with a range of activities offered throughout the school holiday period. Participants can choose which activities to attend based on their interests and availability.

The program includes a mix of:

Youth-led activities

designed, developed and delivered by our Youth Leaders
Activities are hands-on and focus on building knowledge about species and conservation

Staff-led workshops

learn from staff around the zoo about their area of expertise
activities may include presentations, workshops, tours and hands on activities

Offsite conservation action

make a real impact for conservation in the local community
offsite days may include clean ups, habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring and citizen science projects

Youth campaign stall

learn to advocate for wildlife in our campaign shifts
support staff on our Animal Adventurers programs
participate in workshops that develop your communication, teamwork and leadership skills

Learn. Lead. Take action.
Develop conservation knowledge, build confidence and leadership skills, connect with passionate peers, and gain hands-on experience making a positive impact for wildlife and the community.
