Youth at Perth Zoo
Inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders
Youth at Perth Zoo (YAPZ) is a year-long youth development and conservation program for young people who are passionate about wildlife, the environment, and making a positive difference in their community.
Through a range of engaging experiences, YAPZ provides participants with opportunities to learn about wildlife conservation, develop practical skills, connect with like-minded peers, and contribute to real conservation action both at Perth Zoo and in the wider community.
The program supports young people to become informed, confident, and capable advocates for wildlife while gaining valuable life skills that can be applied in education, employment, and everyday life.

To empower young people to connect with wildlife, inspire action for conservation, and create a future where wildlife and humanity thrive together.
Program requirements
To participate in the Youth at Perth Zoo (YAPZ) program, participants must:
- Be aged 13 to 19 years.
- Hold a current Perth Zoo Membership, or purchase one before the start of the program.
- Pay an annual registration fee of $350, commencing from January 2027. This fee contributes to program delivery, your YAPZ uniform, insurance, and participant resources.
Skills you'll develop
As a YAPZ participant, you'll have opportunities to:
- Build your knowledge of wildlife, conservation, sustainability, and zoo operations.
- Learn how Perth Zoo contributes to species conservation, education, visitor engagement, and animal care.
- Develop communication and public speaking skills.
- Strengthen teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Build confidence and leadership capabilities.
- Gain experience engaging with visitors and the community.
- Connect with other young people who share a passion for wildlife and conservation.
- Participate in meaningful conservation projects and community action.
Program structure
Youth at Perth Zoo is a year-long program with activities offered during each school holiday period. Special events or activities may also occur on the weekends during the term.
Participants can choose from a variety of experiences and are encouraged to attend multiple activities each holiday to gain the most from the program. Activities may vary throughout the year depending on seasonal opportunities, conservation campaigns, zoo operations, and special events.
The program includes a mix of:
Youth-led activities
Designed and delivered by experienced youth leaders, these sessions empower participants to learn from one another, share ideas, and take an active role in shaping their conservation journey.
Staff-led learning experiences
Participants can learn directly from Perth Zoo staff and other experts about conservation, animal care, education, horticulture, visitor engagement, sustainability, research, and other areas that contribute to the Zoo's mission.
Self-directed exploration
Young people are encouraged to explore topics that interest them, undertake independent learning, and discover the many ways conservation is approached within and beyond Perth Zoo.
Conservation action activities
A core component of YAPZ is taking action for wildlife. Participants have opportunities to contribute to real conservation outcomes through community projects, conservation campaigns, habitat restoration activities, and citizen science initiatives.
More than a conservation program
YAPZ is also a community.
The program brings together young people from diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in wildlife and conservation. Through shared experiences, teamwork, and social activities, participants develop lasting friendships, support networks, and a strong sense of belonging.
