Our animal care teams are on a skin-soothing mission for Memphis the Southern White Rhino!

Many of you would know that our animal carers have been closely monitoring Memphis’ skin lesions over the past months.

His dedicated team have been lovingly cleaning and soothing these daily, working hard to help get him back on track.

Recently, we enlisted the help of our friends at Animal Dermatology Clinic to collect some samples and help us get to the bottom of what’s causing the lesions.

Thanks to on-going positive training, Memphis walked into a secure crush, was given a light sedation and fed all his favourite treats while vets went to work. 

Weighing it just under 2tonnes, taking skin samples in a way that’s safe for both rhino and humans involved is certainly no mean feat! 

But thanks to on-going positive training and excellent relationships with Memphis, this procedure went off without a hitch!

Now, the samples have been sent off to the lab for testing to help us create a new treatment plan to soothe Memphis’ skin.
