Welcome to Perth Zoo

Illegal wildlife trade drives species to extinction, fuels organised crime, deepens poverty, damages ecosystems and spreads diseases that can pass to humans.

TRAFFIC is working to stop illegal trafficking, fight wildlife crime, protect nature and improve livelihoods by providing alternative sustainable opportunities for communities to thrive.

In collaboration with Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA), Perth Zoo supports TRAFFIC to continue their vital work fighting the illegal wildlife trade, funding a wildlife crime analyst position to monitor the sale of animals, plants, and animal parts on the black market.
This data is critical to fighting wildlife crime, apprehending traffickers, and supporting the prosecution to show the widespread impact of wildlife crime on species and environments.

Did you know Australia is now considered a global hotspot for reptile smuggling?

Some of Perth Zoo’s animals have their beginnings in the illegal wildlife trade before being discovered enroute, rescued and brought to the zoo?

Wildlife trafficking exposes animals to cruelty and inhumane practices and exposes individuals to injury and disease. Animals may not be fit to return to the wild.
